Do you have a plan in place should your pet experience the need for urgent veterinary care? No pet owner ever wants to imagine such a scenario, but the fact is accidents happen and sudden, unexpected illnesses occur. The most important thing is knowing ahead of time who you can turn to in your time of need. Animal Hospital of River Oaks is equipped to provide critical medical, diagnostic and surgical care as needed.

Our team is experienced in handling emergency situations with swiftness and efficiency to achieve the best possible outcome. Whether your pet swallowed something they shouldn’t have, has been injured due to trauma, like being hit by a car, or is just exhibiting signs and symptoms that alarm you, we’re here to provide all of the care and treatment necessary in a moment’s notice. Some of the signs that your pet may require urgent medical attention include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Broken bones
  • Lacerations or puncture wounds
  • Ingestion of something toxic
  • Inability to urinate or defecate
  • Vomiting or diarrhea that contains blood or that continues for more than 24 hours
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Unconsciousness
  • Seizures

If you notice any of these signs or symptoms in your pet, contact our hospital immediately at (905) 338-6257.

Whenever possible, we always recommend that you call ahead, prior to bringing your pet in for urgent care. This allows us to do a preliminary assessment of your pet’s condition, provide advice for how you may be able to manage the situation in the interim, and prepare for your pet’s arrival at the hospital. That way, we’ll be ready to step in and administer the necessary care and attention the moment you arrive.

Of course, if the nature of your pet’s emergency does not allow you to phone ahead, do not hesitate to bring them directly to our clinic for immediate care and attention.

We certainly hope we never have to see your pet on an urgent care basis, but if the need does arise, it’s good to know you can count on us to be here for you!

For after-hours emergencies, we are affiliated with the local veterinary emergency hospital, which is only a 10 minute drive from our hospital. This will ensure that your pet always receives the best possible care, regardless of whether it’s during the day, in the middle of the night, on a weekend or in the midst of a holiday celebration. Rest assured that your pet will be well taken care of at all times!
